It's almost time to begin registration for the 2012 "Great Bamboo Boat Race"!!!

Find the Preliminary 2012 Rules here. Be advised they are different than 2011 in regards to paddles- One paddle will be issued and that paddle is all that is allowed for propulsion!

Find the entry form here.

The race will be held during Family Weekend, Saturday October 6th. The building period is 12:30-3:30 pm, races begin at 4:00 pm! Limited to first 20 teams, you snooze, you lose! We're starting the process weeks ahead of usual to give you more time to think it over this year!

History:

The second "Great Bamboo Boat Race" was held on Saturday Oct 1st, 2011.

See the Photo Gallery Here!

Three heats were run over a triangular course, all marks to port, south of the old pier. The usual first two heats were followed by the final heat. We planned a 'repechage' heat but a lack of participants and not enough time caused the event to go directly to the finals.

The registered teams were:

1    Love Shack                         Michael Adashek
2    Spoon Puddlers                   Conor Colgan
3    Windsurfing Club                 Andrew Surgent
i     We Grade You                      Dave Kung
5    Lost Johnson                        Kenneth Doutt
6    Aquaholics                           Alexander Bates
7    The Nargles                          Christian Sabett
8    The Amazons and Theseus     Allegra Garrett
9    Bamboozle                           Jacob Taylor

12   Whorecruxes                        Elise Valkanas

14   Cadiz                                  Alberto Gonzales-Cela
15   JKL                                     Lisa Williams

Unfortunately not every team showed up! Two heats were run from the  entrants who did make it:

Heat 1;
1      Love Shack
3      Windsurfing Club
5      Lost Johnson
7      The Nargles
9      Bamboozle

The First "Great Bamboo Boat Race" was held on Saturday, Oct 2, 2010! The desire to 'go green' with a more sustainable, re-usable, and recyclable approach evolved the idea of migrating from the previous materials. Racing for the prize were 18 teams. Four heats were run over the typical square course, all marks to port, south of the old pier. The usual first two heats were followed by a final heat. We planned a 'repechage' heat consisting of the bottom 5 survivors from each of the first two heats- unfortunately we didn't have that many survivors! To be fair the judges announced that the boats wishing to try the Repechage "Loser's bracket" challenge would simply race with the winners of the third heat for the final. One boat took up the challenge!

Though we didn't intend to literally go green- we were- with mostly green bamboo, yellow sissal "bailing twine," and the paddlers visible through the plastic gleaming in the afternoon sun, the boats took on an interesting, translucent glow! Some elected to build bamboo rafts and forego the plastic altogether! The aftermath of the event was easy to separate, and the plastic quickly disappeared to be recycled. The surviving bamboo will be stored for use in next years event- or for reuse in other creative ways! If anyone would like a commemorative walking stick, wants to mark out a garden, would love to make a bamboo 'didgeridoo' or a pan flute, we have plenty of bamboo!
