How do I schedule an appointment?
You have several options:
1) use our online scheduler,
2) stop by during our walk-in hours, and we'll do our best to assist you, or
3) email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance or additional availability.
E-mailing or stopping by are the best options if you can't make any of the posted hours.
Oral Expression Center
In addition to writing tutorials, the Writing Center offers tutoring and other services related to oral expression. Use the links below for more information.
Writing Tutorials vs. Oral Expression Tutorials:
Oral Expression tutorials work in much the same way as writing tutorials in that you can schedule an appointment online and work with a trained tutor. Unlike writing tutorials, however, you may choose to work mostly alone (for example, to practice a presentation) or work directly with a tutor (for example, to brainstorm ideas). A tutor will usually be on hand to assist you with equipment and answer questions, but you can also just practice on your own if you'd prefer.
Oral Expression Center Location and Hours:
LI 115 is available whenever classes are not using it if you'd like to practice and/or record your presentation on your own. If you want to work with a tutor, appointments are available 2:00-8:00 on Sunday through Thursday. To schedule an appointment, click here. If these hours do not work for you, please e-mail Mandy Taylor at email@example.com to make special arrangements.
Ways to Use Oral Expression Tutoring:
Just as you can make an appointment to discuss any aspect of the writing process with a Writing Center tutor, you can also make an appointment to work on any aspect of oral expressions assignments. For example, an oral expressions tutorial may involve:
-brainstorming ideas for a presentation,
-planning a presentation,
-rehearsing a presentation (either in person or by viewing a recording, PowerPoint, etc.),
-developing visual aids (posters, PowerPoints, etc.), and
-developing strategies to reduce public speaking anxiety.
Other Oral Expression Services:
Even if you choose not to work directly with a tutor, you may still make an appointment to:
-videotape a speech or presentation (video capability coming soon),
-practice an individual or group presentation.
Available Equipment and Resources:
As part of Oral Expression tutoring, the following items are available for student use:
-white board and dry erase markers,
-chairs and tables,
-reserved classroom space in LI 115,
Recording a Speech or Presentation:
We are in the process of adding a fully integrated camera system to the OEC, but our temporary setup still allows students to record presentations or speeches. The steps are as follows:
- Visit LI 115 outside of the hours the room is used for classes.
- Locate the cart with the webcam and directions.
- Follow the directions on the sheet on the cart (these will walk you through positioning the camera and making the recording).
- After filming, your video will be available as an unlisted YouTube video, and you can access the video online for your own purposes, share the link with others, or make an appointment to view the video with a tutor to get feedback.
Have questions about the OEC? Please e-mail Mandy Taylor at firstname.lastname@example.org.
