Through consideration of representative comedies, histories, tragedies, and later romances, this course will develop an understanding of Shakespeare’s plays as texts written for and animated by performance. Students will approach the scripts from two viewpoints: a stage-centered perspective that examines the contributions of historical and immediate production, and a comparative study that focuses on common themes, structures, language, and other literary devices in the plays. This course may be used to satisfy an elective requirement for the English major. Prerequisites: At least one literature course and junior or senior standing.
