We know many of you already engage in community service, whether professionally or personally. If you do, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSc7muBiaXjgMu3ajtMjgGaYrjVRFdaXv34GrHX9B1Xn7k8Sxw\/viewform?usp=sf_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">please let us know about it!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We want to track SMCM&#8217;s positive impact on the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are looking for a way to volunteer, review our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1AlP4fuqxkeXnWhhqZUryOUu08v5Zk9omqoK9Ttwuibc\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of one-time and ongoing opportunities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each September, CDCE hosts a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/community-engagement\/non-profit-expo\/\">Nonprofit Expo<\/a>\u00a0where you can meet staff and volunteers from local nonprofits and learn about volunteering with them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the spring semester, you are invited<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to participate in the MLK Day of Service and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/alumni\/bay-to-bay-service-days\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bay to Bay Service Days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might also consider sitting on a local board or committee, or offering to serve as a guest speaker\/lecturer at a community meeting or event. If you are interested, <\/span><a href=\"mailto:community@smcm.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reach out to us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are always looking for faculty willing to speak out in the community about their work. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, we host the well-received Science in the Pub series, where faculty can share their research with the general public in a relaxed, happy-hour environment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you would like to be part of the SMCM Speakers Bureau, please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSfOevgFGorT6_0b7TTdDaQ4D5nLqx2CFhqeC4VNmd-f_o7pCw\/viewform?usp=sf_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fill out this form.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, at the end of each academic year<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the SMCM Community Impact Awards recognize faculty, staff, students, and community partners for their service, leadership, and partnership. Faculty members should reach out to us at the beginning stages of planning. We can connect you with community organizations, review your project plans, and help ensure your course meets the standard for CBL.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is community-engaged learning?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously referred to as service learning or community-based learning, -community-engaged learning (CEL) refers to <\/span><b>experiential (out-of-classroom, reflective) courses<\/b> <b>that have a specific focus on community service<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, i.e., work that addresses an identified need in the local community.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\">CEL courses must include reciprocal community partners. They should contain <b>30% or more coursework that relates to civic engagement <\/b>and demonstrate <b>collaborative and meaningful engagement with community partners.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SMCM is committed to expanding opportunities for students to engage in <b>mutually beneficial partnerships within St. Mary\u2019s County and the Southern Maryland region. <\/b>Some examples of current CEL courses at SMCM include Community Arts, Writing the Word in the World, Spanish in the Community,\u00a0 Coastal Community Resilience, Spanish in the Community, Community-Based Plays, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and several of our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/career-development\/spring25-lead-pathway-211\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEAD 211<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offerings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more information on community engagement and community-engaged learning, refer to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carnegieclassifications.acenet.edu\/elective-classifications\/community-engagement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carnegie Foundation website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SMCM faculty and staff are encouraged to get involved and give back to the St. Mary\u2019s and Southern Maryland community.
