Faculty members should reach out to us at the beginning stages of planning. We can connect you with community organizations, review your project plans, and help ensure your course meets the standard for CBL.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is community-based learning?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously referred to as service learning, community-based learning (CBL) refers to <\/span><b>experiential (out-of-classroom, reflective) courses<\/b> <b>which have a specific focus on community service<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, i.e., work that addresses an identified need in the local community. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\">CBL is consistent with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/president\/strategic-plan\/\">SMCM\u2019s strategic plan<\/a> emphasis on expanding opportunities for students to be engaged in <b>mutually beneficial partnerships within St. Mary\u2019s County and the Southern Maryland region. <\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\">CBL courses must include reciprocal community partners.
