Joseph has been a manager and designer in the Eastern states for more than 30 years, serving as a production manager, facility manager, and designer of events and facilities for all sizes of regional performing arts organizations, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Round House Theatre, Adventure Theatre, Flying V, WSC/Avant Bard, The Maryland Shakespeare Festival (1.0 and 2.0), The Source Theatre Co., the Olney Theatre, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, and many, many others.
He has served on the faculties of the University of Maryland, College Park, Montgomery College, St. Mary’s College, and Hood College, and has served as a guest artist for many other educational institutions.
He has been twice nominated for the Helen Hayes Award for outstanding Set Design and has received the Mary Goldwater Award and the Gilbert Hartke Award for his designs.
When not working professionally, Mr. Musumeci has served as an adjudicator for the American Association of Community Theatres in Region II. His educational background includes the University of Notre Dame (B.A., Theatre/English) and the North Carolina School of the Arts (Graduate studies in Production Design), as well as certificates in graphic design and CADD. He has been an associate artist, resident designer, or company member of the Round House Theatre, BOTH releases of the Maryland Shakespeare Festival, The Theatre Conspiracy, Venus Theatre, and Flying V.
He first set foot on the campus of St. Mary’s in the Spring of 1987 as the TD and Scenic Designer for the 1987 Maryland Shakespeare Festival, and is tickled that fate has led him back here today. He has also been a guest artist in Montgomery Hall many times, and filled in as the TD/LD in 2000 for a semester, so this is like homecoming, but with better fringe benefits and less late night vomiting.
