The following shared experiences will be required of all Performing Arts majors:
PERF 101 Critical Creativity in the Performing Arts (4 credits, lower-level).
Performing Arts “gateway” course, ideally to be taken in the first year. This could be a LEAD course in the humanities category;
The Performing Arts Today (4 credits, upper-level).
To be taken in spring of the junior year and fall of the senior year. Focuses on vocational and practical issues in the world of the performing arts. Topics could include career preparation, sound recording, stagecraft, etc.
Capstone Course in Ensemble Performance Creation (8 credits – 4 in fall, 4 in spring) OR St. Mary’s Project (SMP)
A culmination of a Performing Arts Major’s education, completed throughout senior year.

Degree Requirements for the Performing Arts Major with a Concentration in Music
General College Requirements, including the following requirements to satisfy the major.
Required of all Music Concentrators:
A grade of C- or better must be received in each course. Courses taken for credit/no credit may not be used to satisfy requirements.
Music Theory:

Ethnomusicology:
MUSC 216 Introduction to the World’s Music
Performance Requirements. A grade of C or better must be received in each course under this requirement. Courses taken for credit/no credit may not be used to satisfy the performance requirement. Students earning below a C in any semester will need to re-audition for private instruction and ensemble participation.
Private Instruction: the final four semesters (one credit hour each) chosen from MUSA 380, 381, 384, 385, 386, 387, 388, 389. Students are encouraged to take this course in earlier semesters as well.
Ensemble Participation: the final four semesters (one credit hour each) of large ensemble (MUSA 480 Choir, MUSA 482 Chamber Singers, MUSA 486 Jazz Ensemble, or MUSA 489 Orchestra). Students are encouraged to take these courses in earlier semesters as well.
St. Mary’s Project
Completion of MUSC 493/494 St. Mary’s Project in Music (eight credit hours). Alternatively, students may complete an 8-credit capstone course/production. This requirement is waived if the student completes either a senior seminar or a St. Mary’s Project in another major. Students exercising this option must obtain prior approval of the music faculty.
Minimum Grade and GPA Requirements
To earn a bachelor of arts degree with a Performing Arts Major with a Concentration in Music, a student must satisfy the minimum requirements with an overall minimum GPA of 2.0 in required MUSA/MUSC courses.
