We believe true public safety is built on trust, visibility, and shared responsibility. Community Policing at SMCM means our officers are actively engaged in campus life\u2014not just during times of crisis, but in everyday moments. From attending student events to walking the campus, hosting open forums, or playing a game of basketball, we work to build relationships before problems arise. Our goal is to be known not just by our uniforms, but by our character, presence, and commitment to collaboration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Understanding difference is essential to protecting everyone.<\/p>\n

We serve a richly diverse campus, and we embrace the responsibility that comes with it. Cultural competence requires more than awareness\u2014it demands intentional learning, open-mindedness, and the humility to grow. Our officers undergo regular training and are expected to continually deepen their understanding of the social, cultural, and historical contexts that shape identity. We strive to create safe spaces for every student, faculty, and staff member, ensuring our department is responsive to the needs and lived experiences of all communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

\nWe recognize that how we respond is just as important as what we do. Emotional intelligence is a foundational skill for our officers\u2014it helps us communicate clearly, de-escalate conflict, and respond to others with empathy and respect. We train our team to understand their own triggers, manage stress under pressure, and make thoughtful, composed decisions even in difficult moments. By modeling emotional intelligence, we foster safer interactions and a more humane approach to public safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Procedural<\/strong> Justice <\/h2><\/div><\/div>

Fairness is not optional\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0a mandate.<\/p>\n

Procedural justice is the lens through which we view every interaction. We are committed to treating all individuals with dignity and fairness, regardless of circumstance. This means being transparent in our actions, consistent in our application of rules, and open to feedback. We ensure that individuals are given a voice, understand the reasoning behind decisions, and experience respect throughout the process.
