The Director of Public Safety works with the campus Emergency Response Team (<strong>ERT<\/strong>) to determine if an evacuation, lock-down or shelter in place is necessary and the scope of the situation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#evacuations\">Evacuations<\/a>, <a href=\"#lock-down\">lock-downs \/ shelter in place<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"#take-shelter\">take shelter<\/a> orders may include all or portions of buildings, specific areas of the campus or the entire campus depending upon the nature of the emergency. In the event of a campus wide evacuation the College will be supported by the St. Mary\u2019s County Emergency Services and Technology Office and the St. Mary\u2019s County Sheriff\u2019s Office to ensure safe egress.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of Public Safety will establish and ensure staffing of traffic control points that are considered necessary. They will also maintain access control and security for the affected areas.<\/p>\n<p>In the event of a campus wide evacuation, lock-down or shelter in place the <strong>ERT<\/strong> in cooperation with the President of the College will determine when the emergency is over and the campus is open. This information will be disseminated using all appropriate and available methods of communication.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-43-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-43-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shelter in Place SMCM\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kqqLWq62wSc\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-43-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-43-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-43-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_smcm-title panel-first-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div id=\"evacuations\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-43-1-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-smcm-title so-widget-smcm-title-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h2 class=\"smcm-section-title navy\" style=\"\"><strong>Evacuations<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-43-1-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text\" data-index=\"3\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p>\u201cEvacuate\u201d is the term used when it is necessary to vacate a specific building(s) and\/or area of the campus. Occupants in the affected area will be required to leave the building and\/or area as quickly and calmly as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reasons for an Evacuation:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe reasons the College may require an evacuation include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fires and\/or fire alarms<\/li>\n<li>Severe weather events<\/li>\n<li>Hazardous material spills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Notification<\/strong><br \/>\nThe campus community will be notified to evacuate via all appropriate and available methods, based on the nature of the emergency, of communication including:.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fire Alarm<\/li>\n<li>Emergency texting via Campus Shield<\/li>\n<li>Public Address System<\/li>\n<li>Campus email<\/li>\n<li>College Twitter Page<\/li>\n<li>College Web site<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Required Action:<\/strong><br \/>\nEvacuation may be required due to hazardous materials spills\/releases that do not involve a campus facility such as a transportation accident. An assessment by on-scene personnel will determine the appropriate area and populations to be considered for evacuation. Follow the instructions of responding emergency personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Residence hall and academic building evacuation processes are listed in the Emergency Resource Guide on this site and in the Campus Shield App Safety Resources.<\/p>\n<p>When the all clear signal is given the emergency is resolved. Classes, if in session and affected, will resume at the nearest class time period.<\/p>\n<p>If someone is in need of assistance and you are able, please help in any way you can.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><div id=\"panel-43-1-0-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_smcm-title\" data-index=\"4\" ><div id=\"lock-down\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-43-1-0-2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-smcm-title so-widget-smcm-title-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h2 class=\"smcm-section-title navy\" style=\"\"><strong>Lock-down\/Shelter in place<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-43-1-0-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text\" data-index=\"5\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p>The College has the ability to secure buildings in the event of an emergency. The buildings may be secured remotely via the CS Gold system and\/or manually. Residence halls are secure 24\/7. <strong>In the event of a Lock-down\/Shelter in Place order do not leave the building you are in until an all clear announcement is given by College authorities or local law enforcement.<\/strong> Additional information can be found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/public-safety\/emergency-resource-guide\/\">Emergency Resource Guide<\/a> on this site and in the Campus Shield App Safety Resources.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><div id=\"panel-43-1-0-4\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_smcm-title\" data-index=\"6\" ><div id=\"take-shelter\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-43-1-0-4\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-smcm-title so-widget-smcm-title-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h2 class=\"smcm-section-title navy\" style=\"\"><strong>Take Shelter<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-43-1-0-5\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-last-child\" data-index=\"7\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p>\u201cTake shelter\u201d will be the term used when it is necessary to allow access to buildings on campus in the case of an emergency requiring persons to shelter from adverse external conditions.
