Pre-Award Services

The Director of Research and Sponsored Programs, Sabine Dillingham, is pleased to provide the following pre-award services to faculty and staff seeking external funding. Please see the Meet Our Staff tab for contact information and additional background about Sabine.

Assist in disseminating funding news
  • Disseminate updates on federal budgets, funding priorities and agency guidelines
  • Disseminate philanthropy news relevant to the liberal arts
Assist in identifying funding opportunities

Funding is available for research, instruction, or public service projects from sources including federal and non-federal.

  • Disseminate updates on general funding sources relevant to liberal arts faculty and staff
  • Train faculty and staff in setting up specific search profiles for several funding search engines, such as InfoEdPlus, GRC and Foundation Directory Online
  • Perform ad-hoc searches for funding of specific projects upon requests
Assist with development of research/grant proposal or contract
  • Review sponsor guidelines and identify key issues
  • Help prepare budget and review budget justification
  • Help prepare and negotiate Memorandum of Understandings (MOU), teaming agreements, contracts, confidentiality agreements, and other types of contractual arrangements
  • Contacts potential sponsors, as needed, to obtain forms not already on file in ORSP or for guidance and clarification regarding the submission of a proposal;
  • Acts as negotiator and liaison between the PI/PD and the funding agency on issues that arise prior to funding
  • Assist with cost share commitments
  • Assist with sponsor forms and electronic submission systems
  • Assure the proposal meets all sponsor guidelines and format requirements
  • Provide institutional support letter

Provide researchers with templates and samples upon request, such as:

  • Letter of Intent (LOI)
  • Sample Budget Justification
  • Facilities and Resources
  • Data management plan
Process proposal submissions
  • Facilitate routing and obtain appropriate approval signatures
  • Provide institutional approval of proposals
  • Proposal submission
Facilitate post-submission activities
  • Assist with sponsor requests for re-budgets, just in time information, etc.
  • Facilitate research compliance (e.g., FCOI, RCR, IACUC, IRB) in collaboration with other administrative units such as IRB and IACUC committees
  • Coordinate post-award services with other campus units (e.g. business office, departmental fiscal associates, institutional research, human resources)
