These\u00a0buildings conserve energy and water, reduce waste, reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, and utilize renewable building materials.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<h3>What is LEED?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Available for virtually all building, community, and home project types, LEED provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is LEED?\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tlVseOWToL4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points across several categories, including energy use and air quality. Well, Goodpaster, has water bottle fill up stations just for you! By giving students the option to fill water bottles up, they are more likely to reduce and reuse!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-534 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/goodpaster-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"Inside Goodpaster Hall's Courtyard\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/goodpaster-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/goodpaster-768x520.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/goodpaster-1024x694.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>It uses 30-40% less energy than a conventional building due to smart design and use of highly efficient equipment<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Stormwater management is also a big deal at St. Mary&#8217;s. Goodpaster has a fountain that is connected to the gutter system and is supplied solely\u00a0by rainwater. The building also has a <a href=\"https:\/\/greenroofs.org\/about-green-roofs\/\">green roof<\/a> which helps divert stormwater runoff from getting in the St. Mary&#8217;s River.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-510 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/river_center-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Reiver center from the docks at night\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/river_center-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/river_center-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/river_center.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The James P. Muldoon River Center &#8211; LEED Silver<\/h4>\n<p>The River Center uses a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/energysaver\/heat-and-cool\/heat-pump-systems\/geothermal-heat-pumps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">geothermal heat pump<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that reduces 40% of the power it takes to heat and cool the building<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Goodpaster Hall, the River Center uses a gray-water system, waterless urinals, and dual-flush toilets<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-511 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/IMG_1901-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"living shoreline at the river center\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/IMG_1901-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/IMG_1901-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/IMG_1901-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/h4>\n<p>There is also a living shoreline and oyster reef restoration project at the River Center!<\/p>\n<p>St. Mary&#8217;s takes environmental issues very seriously, shoreline erosion is one of the largest problems facing the college. A <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/living-shoreline.html\">living shoreline<\/a> helps to stabilize the shore and keep it from washing away with the tides. It also provides habitat for many organisms!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Anne Arundel Hall &#8211; LEED Gold<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-515 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/anne_arundel.jpg\" alt=\"Anne Arundel Hall\" width=\"3200\" height=\"1328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/anne_arundel.jpg 3200w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/anne_arundel-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/anne_arundel-768x319.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/anne_arundel-1024x425.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3200px) 100vw, 3200px\" \/><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anne Arundel is St. Mary&#8217;s only LEED Gold certified building. It has some really amazing infrastructure\u00a0which makes it Gold! On top of the North building, the roof is lined with solar panels (19Kw photovoltaic array). The solar panels pull energy from the sun and make it usable by the building in the form of electricity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The building was constructed using sustainable materials. The bridges connecting each building have reused wood that is visible from the outside. There are also a lot of efficient materials to keep energy low, like insulated windows and motion sensor lights.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anne Arundel also uses the gray-water system, waterless urinals, and dual-flush toilets to save and reuse water when available.\u00a0 The outside of the building is equipped with many stormwater management practices like rain gardens and a green roof!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Admissions Office<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-507 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/IMG_1880-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Admissions Office\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/IMG_1880-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/IMG_1880-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/IMG_1880-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The admission office has a geothermal heat pump that reduces 50% of the power it takes to heat the building and\u00a0<\/span>30% to cool the building.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also has reduced electrical consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-529 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/library-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"Library at night\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/library-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/library-768x584.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/library-1024x779.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2018\/12\/library.jpg 1616w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Hilda C. While not technically LEED, it has many features that are energy efficient, sustainably sourced, and very educational.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">In the Works<\/h4>\n<p>There are many exciting editions coming to the campus many of which are already in the works! All buildings in St. Mary&#8217;s future will be LEED certified, but we will have to wait and see what they create.<\/p>\n<h4>Jamie L.
