{"id":392,"date":"2024-09-04T20:18:49","date_gmt":"2024-09-04T20:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/tothepoint-2024\/?page_id=392"},"modified":"2024-09-09T17:34:51","modified_gmt":"2024-09-09T17:34:51","slug":"hazing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/tothepoint\/hazing\/","title":{"rendered":"Hazing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any and all forms of hazing are completely prohibited at St. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hazing Defined\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hazing is any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off campus, to produce mental or physical\u00a0discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: use of\u00a0 alcohol; ; creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; quests, treasure hunts,\u00a0scavenger hunts, road trips or any other such activities carried on outside or inside the borders of the College campus;\u00a0wearing of public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and;\u00a0morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with the laws of the state of Maryland or Code of Student Conduct, or the regulations and policies of St. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of Hazing\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following are examples of hazing by category. It is impossible to list all hazing activities, so this list is not intended to be\u00a0all-inclusive. Each activity can be measured against the definition for each category.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subtle Hazing\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actions that are against accepted club or team standards of conduct, behavior and good taste. An activity or attitude directed toward a member or an act which ridicules, humiliates, or embarrasses. Examples:<\/span>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never doing anything with the member (isolation)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calling a member by any demeaning name\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imposing periods of silence on members\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imposing demerits of any kind on members\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing progress reports on new members\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requiring members to call senior team members by titles, honorifics, or salutations, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scavenger hunts for meaningless objects\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assigned duties for new members only\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scaring new members with an initiation\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deprivation of team privileges\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harassment Hazing\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything that causes mental anguish or physical discomfort to the member. Any activity, or activity directed toward\u00a0a member, or activity which confuses, frustrates, or causes undue stress. Examples:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verbal abuse\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any form of questioning under pressure or in an uncomfortable position\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requiring members to wear ridiculous costumes or perform ridiculous activities\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requiring only members to wait until the end or be served last\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stunt or skit events with demeaning and\/or crude skits and\/or poems\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requiring members to perform personal services such as carrying books, running errands, performing maid\u00a0duties, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requiring members to drink alcohol, perhaps to excess, causing illness or other physical problems\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requiring members to be exposed to weather or to foods that would adversely affect physical health\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical Hazing\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland, through the Athletics and Recreation Department, the Office of Student Activities, or any\u00a0other designated personnel, shall issue to every group or organization under its authority, or operating on, in conjunction with\u00a0its campus or school, a copy of this policy. An officer of each such group or organization, and each individual receiving a\u00a0copy of this policy, shall sign an acknowledgement stating that such group, organization, or individual has received a copy of\u00a0the hazing policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the state of Maryland, a person who hazes a student so as to cause serious bodily injury to the student at any school, college, or university is guilty of a misdemeanor and, on conviction, is subject to a fine of not more than $500 or\u00a0imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
