Colby
Caldwell is an assistant professor of art and teaches photography
and digital media at St. Mary's.
He graduated with a BFA in photography from the Corcoran School
of Art (now College of Art and Design) in 1990. He previously
studied 20th century European history at Appalachian State University
from 1983-1986. He has taught in both the photography and the
fine arts departments at the Corcoran from 1997-2002. He teaches
courses in photography and digital art.
His work has been exhibited in Madrid, Basel, and New York
City, among others. Recent projects include a commission for
AT&T Wireless
in Los Angeles, Exit 1 in Reston, Va. and a video piece entitled "ordinary
eternal machinery" in collaboration with Bernard Welt. He is
represented by Hemphill Fine Arts, where he had a solo exhibition
small game in January of 2007. His work was included in the 48th
Corcoran Biennial, “Closer to Home” , and most recently, “Decelerate” at
the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. Caldwell curated
a show, “Made History: Soviet WWII Photography” at
Boyden Gallery at SMCM, which opened in October of 2006.
Caldwell's work in the widest sense, transcends some of the common
assumptions of postmodernism by reintegrating the social with the
personal and by genuinely exploring and appreciating certain cultural
traditions, rather than dismissing them outright.
