Mathematics Major
The mathematics major blends deep theoretical understanding with practical problem solving. Students explore calculus, linear algebra, proof-writing, statistics, and more, while developing their skills in logic and reasoning. Small class sizes foster strong mentorship, and many students participate in summer research, math competitions, and internships. Through our capstone courses, the St. Mary’s Project (SMP), Senior Project, and Senior Topics Seminars, every math major has an in-depth research experience.
Mathematics Minor
The mathematics minor is a powerful complement to any major, providing a solid base in abstract thinking and quantitative analysis. Students explore core courses such as calculus and linear algebra and can tailor upper-level electives to match their interests.

Honors College Promise
Math students at SMCM benefit from rich, hands-on learning experiences through the Honors College Promise. Many participate in NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs), assist faculty with data-driven campus research, or tutor in local schools through the Center for Career & Professional Development. Students have interned with regional employers like defense contractors, financial firms, and state agencies. SMCM’s study abroad programs—such as those in South Korea or Australia—are compatible with the math major, giving students opportunities to explore global mathematical applications while staying on track to graduate.

"The MAA sectional meetings afford students and faculty an opportunity to interact with their peers. This gives us an opportunity to build a network and hear students and professors present their own mathematical interests outside of the classroom."
- Dr. Susan Goldstine, Professor of Mathematics
After you Graduate
Graduates of the mathematics program leave SMCM with strong analytical, quantitative, and logical reasoning skills that are in demand across many industries. Alumni have pursued successful careers in data science, actuarial science, education, finance, operations research, and public policy. Many continue on to graduate programs in mathematics, statistics, economics, and education at top institutions. SMCM math graduates are employed by organizations such as J.F. Taylor, Capital One, and the Goddard Space Flight Center, as well as in school districts and higher education.
