Empowering the Next Generation—One Learner at a Time.
At St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the Educational Studies program helps students become caring, thoughtful teachers and leaders who believe in lifelong learning. The program is built on the values of a liberal arts education and focuses on both ideas and real-life teaching experience. Students learn about how schools work, how people learn, and how culture and identity affect education. Whether they want to become licensed teachers or study how education affects society, students explore big questions about fairness, learning, and justice.
With small classes, hands-on teaching practice, and support from professors, students learn how to help all kinds of learners and create welcoming classrooms. The program works closely with local schools and focuses on making a positive difference. At St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Educational Studies students are prepared to make a real impact in schools, communities, and the world.

Special Education Minor
The Special Education minor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland helps students learn how to support learners with different needs. Students take part in hands-on work with local K–12 schools and study important ideas in small, discussion-based classes. The minor includes six required courses and is a great choice for anyone interested in careers like teaching, school counseling, psychology, or speech and language work. It also gets students ready to join the SMCM Master of Arts in Teaching program, where they can earn a license to teach special education for grades 1–8.

Honors College Promise
Like all degrees from Maryland’s Public Honors College, an Educational Studies major from St. Mary’s College helps students build a future focused on purpose, leadership, and helping others. Many graduates become teachers in PK-12 schools, through the College’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Others work in areas like education policy, counseling, community programs, or nonprofit organizations.
Students learn important ideas about how education works, how to support fairness in schools, and get real classroom experience. They graduate ready to support all types of learners and to think carefully about how schools and learning systems can improve. Whether they are teaching, creating lesson plans, or working to make schools more fair and welcoming, SMCM graduates are ready to make a difference with care, understanding, and a love of learning.

"The most influential lesson that I have experienced as a new teacher is the value of building a relationship with each and every student. The MAT professors demonstrated the importance of student-teacher relationships in the classroom through their actions as they taught my cohort not only how to thrive in the classroom, but also through our lives"
