St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Awards Convocation is a yearly event that recognizes and celebrates members of the College community who are highly accomplished and who can be considered paragons in areas that include service, leadership, teaching and academics.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, St. Mary’s College is unable to hold its yearly Awards Convocation in person. We offer through this site our St. Mary’s College congratulations to all the recipients. We hope visitors to this page will share their pride and thank these honorees for jobs well done.

Junior Faculty Professorship
Pandion haliaetus (Seahawk) Professorship
Haliaeetus leucocephalus (Eagle) Professorship
This two-year named professorship is presented to Junior Faculty who have been employed by the College for three to 10 years and who are exemplary teacher-scholars within their academic program areas. These honorees exceed standards in teaching and or scholarly/creativity and at minimum meet standards for the other. These individuals are also good citizens of the campus community. Recipients will receive a salary enhancement during the time of their professorship and a $10,000 stipend to support their scholarly and/or creative endeavor. There can be no more than two such awards in any department.
When there are two, the more senior faculty member is named the Pandion haliaetus Professor and the other honoree is the Haliaeetus leucocephalus Professor - because seahawks (ospreys) trump eagles.
Named Professorships like these assist in attracting and retaining exemplars such as today’s recipients which are paramount to our students’ success and the long-term viability and vibrancy of the College. This is especially important as we move forward with our LEAD initiative, blending inquiry-based discovery and professional career development skills for every graduate.

Phi Beta Kappa
The Phi Beta Kappa Society was established at the College of William and Mary in 1776. The Greek letters that give the society its name mean “love of wisdom, the guide of life.” From the outset, election to Phi Beta Kappa has signified outstanding achievement in the attainment of an education in the liberal arts. The Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at St. Mary’s College of Maryland was founded in 1997. Students completing their junior or senior year are elected primarily on the basis of scholarly achievement, broad cultural interest, and good character.Class of 2021
