Every April since 2017, SMCM alumni, students, employees and supporters from across the country have come together to give back during National Volunteer Month. This year, we invite you to be a part of SMCM Bay to Bay Service Days, a reflection of The St. Mary's Way—our commitment to community service and making a positive impact.

Students
Transportation to off-site projects will be available from Daugherty-Palmer Commons (DPC). Please check in between 8:30 and 9:15 a.m. Buses will depart at 9:30 a.m.
Alumni & Community Members
You may go directly to your project site. We recommend arriving by 9:45 a.m. to check in and get your volunteer T-shirt.
Kate Farm Spring Maintenance
🎓 SMCM Students Invited to Join
Volunteers will help prepare the farm grounds for spring and summer, ensuring that the farm can continue to provide produce for the campus and local community. This project is suitable for youth volunteers ages 12 and up, with adult supervision.

- Partner Organization: The Kate Chandler Campus Community Farm (The Kate Farm), cared for by student and faculty volunteers, strives to provide great food and community through cultivating diverse, agro-ecological growing and learning opportunities. The Kate Farm nurtures place-based stewardship and skill building in sustainable agriculture.

Greenwell Trail Cleanup

Volunteers will be led by Greenwell Foundation staff on a trail with one simple mission: collect litter! This project is suitable for volunteers 5 years and up. Any volunteer under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

- Partner Organization: Greenwell Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates in Greenwell State Park, a 600-acre property located along the lower Patuxent River in Hollywood, Maryland and is dedicated to providing accessible and inclusive programs, services and facilities for all community members, with and without disabilities, in Southern Maryland.

LMPP Community Garden Spring Prep

Oyster Cage Building
🎓 SMCM Students Invited to Join
Volunteers will use tools to build wire mesh cages that will be used in a study of oyster reproduction in the St. Mary's River. This project is suitable for volunteers 8 years and up, with adult supervision.

Solomon's Sandwiches

Volunteers will make a variety of sandwiches and package them to be delivered to local food pantries, along with notes of encouragement. This project is suitable for youth volunteers 10 years and up, with adult supervision.

- Partner Organization: As part of a grant received from the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the SMCM Hunger-Free Campus Task Force works to address hunger on campus, raise awareness of basic food needs, leverage sustainable solutions to meet those needs and build partnerships with community organizations relating to food insecurity.

Spring Trail and Landscape Care at HSMC
🎓 SMCM Students Invited to Join
Volunteers will focus on general trail and landscape care across several natural areas on site, as well as helping with light maintenance, clearing overgrowth, refreshing pathways and improving the health of trees and surrounding spaces. The work may involve moving along uneven terrain and using basic hand tools for trimming, tidying and small repairs. This project is suitable for youth volunteers ages 13 and up, with adult supervision.

Trinity Church Yard Cleanup

Color on the Creek
Volunteers will help clean up the waterway, fertilize plants, relocate and add planters, remove algae and more – all to ensure the successful growth of hundreds of lilies, lotus and bog plants that make this waterway such an incredible landmark of Frederick. This project is not suitable for youth volunteers.

- Partner Organization: Color on the Creek is an all volunteer inspired and managed water garden located in the Carroll Creek Linear Park which runs through the heart of downtown Frederick.

- Post-Service Project Social: After the project, volunteers are invited to Beans & Bagels for breakfast and coffee.
Invasive Plant Removal at 630 East
Volunteers will assist in removing invasive plants from Rock Creek Park. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be supervised by a parent or guardian.

- Partner Organization: Rock Creek Conservancy is a watershed organization whose mission is to restore Rock Creek Park and its parklands as a natural oasis for all people to appreciate and protect.

Out-of-County Projects
Earth Day Invasive Plant Pull Removal at Quiet Waters Park
Volunteers will remove invasive plants from the park by pulling up the plants by hand and occasionally using tools such as loppers and weed wrenches (provided by the organizers). This project is suitable for youth volunteers 9 years and up, with adult supervision.

- Partner Organization: This event is organized by Friends of Quiet Waters Park and Capital SUP/Live Water Foundation with support from Save Our Trees. Save our Trees aims to protect and preserve the area's mature canopy trees by removing invasive vines, educating the community and advocating for legislative changes.

Shoreline Cleanup at Middle Branch Park
Volunteers will participate in a shoreline clean up in Middle Branch Park, collecting trash along the waterfront. Children under 18 must be supervised by a parent or guardian during the event.

- Partner Organization: Baltimore Community Rowing (BCR) promotes the sport of rowing for fitness, competition, and recreation by offering programs for middle school, high school, and adult athletes in Baltimore City and throughout Maryland.

- Post-Service Project Social: Following the project, SMCM Bay to Bay Service Day volunteers are invited to join us for appetizers and refreshments at a nearby restaurant in the Baltimore Peninsula.

Invasive Plant Removal at Greenwood Park
Volunteers will help remove invasive shrubs and vines from Greenwood Park in the northern Middlesex Fells, helping to reclaim habitat for native species and curtail the spread of invasive plants. This project is suitable for youth volunteers, 10 years and older, with adult supervision.
