About the Program:
SMCM in Ecuador is a semester-long study abroad program that allows an opportunity for Spanish-language immersion, working with our partner EcuaExplora and the Universidad de Cuenca. Housing is with an Ecuadorian family homestay, including two meals a day, and students will take a total of 5 classes taught at the Universidad de Cuenca and an internship . This program also includes a three night, four day trip to the Galapagos Islands, other full day excursions (for example, such as Quilotoa, Papallacta, Mindo or Otavalo & Cuicocha), and of course on-site orientation and continuous support.
Location:
Though the program explores other locations in Ecuador, the duration of the program is in Cuenca, Ecuador. Cuenca is a colonial city and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the southern Andes of the Azuay province – a beautiful small city with four rivers running through it. It’s a great home base from which to learn about Ecuadorian culture!
Academics:
Students will have a one-month long internship (either before or after semester courses, depending on the term) at a local NGO and take courses in the Spanish language at the Universidad de Cuenca. This program requires a high level of Spanish language proficiency, and specific courses will depend on each student’s proficiency and interests.
