Student Designed - Chinese Major
The student-designed Chinese major at St. Mary’s College of Maryland allows students to build a personalized, interdisciplinary program focused on Chinese language and culture. Combining advanced Chinese courses with two other disciplines, students shape a path aligned with their global or career goals. Approval by the Curriculum Review Committee and guidance from faculty mentors are required. Interested students should consult the ILC chair and student-designed major coordinator early on.
Chinese Minor
The Chinese concentration emphasizes language, culture, literature, film, and Chinese diaspora studies. Students explore Chinese cinema, contemporary society, digital media, and Asian-American narratives—gaining both linguistic proficiency and cultural literacy in fields like Asian Studies and Chinese-American literature. The curriculum empowers students to shape their academic paths and tailor their studies to align with their interests and career goals.

Honors College Promise
Students pursuing the Chinese concentration often engage in distinguished experiential learning supported by the Honors College Promise. Many travel abroad—studying at partner universities or participating in the CET program in Taipei, Taiwan. These students may also complete independent classroom-related research or translation projects. Strong faculty mentorship and Honors College backing enable these experiences to inform high-impact St. Mary’s Projects or summer research initiatives.

"If there wasn’t a Chinese language program here I wouldn’t have been able to go to Shanghai for a semester. "
