Research Support from Library Faculty
Library faculty are valuable research partners and are enthusiastic about supporting SURF students. Whether you're developing your proposal or conducting research during the summer, they can provide guidance on research methods, academic writing, and finding and evaluating sources.
Library faculty are available:
- Before the program to help students develop strong project proposals.
- During the SURF program to support students throughout their research projects.
Library and Archives Director – Amanda VerMeulen
Amanda VerMeulen works with faculty librarians, professional staff, and student employees to provide library services to the SMCM community.
Research interests include:
- Leadership and management
- Copyright, licensing, and scholarly communication
- User experience (UX) and usability research, including:How people interact with physical spaces
- How people interact with digital environments
- The impact of color and design on user experience
Areas of expertise include:
- Qualitative survey and interview design
- Usability testing
- Navigating the IRB process
- Communicating research findings to broad audiences
College Archivist – Shane Moran
Shane Moran oversees the College Archives, preserving institutional records and supporting research for students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Research interests include:
- Archival description and access
- Community memory and cultural preservation
- The development of culture and historical narratives
- American foreign policy and Cold War political history
Areas of expertise include:
- Archival and historical research
- Scholarly source interpretation
- Oral history
- Historiography
- Technical writing
Students are also welcome to connect with other liaison librarians, although they may not be available to serve as SURF mentors.
