Carrie Patterson
Carrie Patterson is an Assistant Professor of art and teaches all levels Drawing, and Painting. In addition she teaches topics courses titled: Drawing through Architecture, Introduction to visual thinking: The body and art, and Color. She received a B.F.A in painting from James Madison University and an M.F.A in painting from The University of Pennsylvania. She also studied drawing and painting at The New York Studio School. Before coming to St. Mary’s in 2004, she was a Visiting Instructor of art at The College of William and Mary for four years. Patterson’s current body of work is based on her perceptual lived experience at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Leonardtown, Maryland. St. Francis Xavier is a historic chapel dating from 1731 and is filled with very particular color, light, landscape, and intention. Her work is based on visual interpretations of measurement in the space. She creates images that give expression to the experience of inhabiting space. She uses memories of light and form as a vehicle for inventing compositions. These images are about the individual experience of navigating through spaces that we encounter.
