Sue
Johnson is a Professor of Art and has been teaching at St. Mary's
College since 1993. She teaches courses in painting, drawing,
printmaking, combined media, book arts, and scientific illustration.
Professor Johnson received a B.F.A. from Syracuse University
and an M.F.A. in painting from Columbia University. She studied
art in London and Florence with Syracuse University. Before coming
to St. Mary's, she was the workshop coordinator for Triangle
Artists' Workshop, and taught at the Herron School of Art I.U.P.U.I,
and the Parsons School of Design. Her on-going mixed media project,
The Alternate Encyclopedia has been shown extensively since 1995
at museums, universities, galleries and alternative spaces. Professor
Johnson has received several national grants and awards, including
an NEA Mid-Atlantic grant in painting, Pollock-Krasner Foundation
fellowship and two Maryland State Council on the Arts individual
artist awards in painting and sculpture/ installation. |

Exhibition: Exchange
The Kunst und Gewerbeverein Gallery in Regensberg, Germany will be the site of an exhibition of works by fellows of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts international residency program at the Oberfalzer Kunsterhaus in Schwandorf, Germany. Johnson was a resident fellow in 1999. Works to be shown include Sue Johnson’s Alice Redux and several artist books.

Rosenbach Museum and Library, Philadelphia, PA
Johnson is currently serving as an artist-in-residence at the Rosenbach Museum and Library. She is developing an exhibition project based on her research that commingles the storytelling of Lewis Carroll and the poetry of Marianne Moore. The Library holds significant archives of the works of both Carroll and Moore.
Upcoming one-person exhibitions include exhibitions at the
University of Richmond Art Museums, 2008 and the Rosenbach Library
and Museum in 2009.
Recent one-person exhibitions at Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2007; Swarthmore College,
2007; The John Michael Kohler Art Center, 2006; Carleton College, 2005; and
the Tweed Museum of Art, 2004.
Awarded a resident library research fellowships by the American
Philosophical Society, 2004; and the American Antiquarian Society,
2000.
Awarded residency fellowships to the Kohler Arts/Industry program,
2007; Jentel Foundation, 2006, Salzburg Kunstlerhaus, 2006; Virginia
