In the 2007 Special Session, the Maryland General Assembly enacted the Tax Reform Act of 2007. As part of that package, income tax rates/withholding allowances were altered, and became effective January 1, 2008.
Beginning with calendar year 2008, you can choose a filing status for both federal and state withholdings. The new Maryland withholding selections are single, married (surviving spouse or unmarried head of household), or married but withhold at single rate.
Filing status for Maryland residents is now displayed on your pay stub. Look for 'MD Filing Status: Single'. The 'filing status' for Maryland residents was defaulted to "single" for all employees.
As far as State tax rates are concerned, many employees will be unaffected by these changes. Here are some basic tips that should help you decide if you need to complete a new employee withholding allowance certificate (W4):
