Carol Becker
Dean of the Faculty
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Dean of the Faculty at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, artist and art historian Carol Becker has written extensively on issues of gender, politics, and art, including her most recent work, Surpassing the Spectacle: Global Transformations and the Changing Politics of Art.
In "Amazwi Abesifazane: Indigenous Women and the Traumas of Apartheid," Dr. Becker will talk about her on-going community art project which asks indigenous Zulu women of South Africa to document their conditions under the apartheid system. Sponsored by South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Committee, this project was initially envisioned as a short-term documentary art project, but soon grew in scope and sparked grassroots community activism and political consciousness among the Zulu women.
