Begun in 1971 by founding Director Jonathan Ingersoll as a hands-on teaching collection for the campus community, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Collection consists of a study collection of more than 1500 works displayed in the College’s 47 academic buildings, and a core collection of approximately 500 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, textiles, and mixed-media works housed in Collections Storage.
The current focus of the core collection is works that illuminate the story of 20th-century America and its art. Particularly strong in mid-century American art, especially of artists working in New York in the 1960s and 70s, the Collection also features a number of 19th and 20th-century European and American prints. SMCM is known for its beautiful environs that have inspired countless regional and alumni artists. More than 60 works in the collection pay tribute to the school’s bucolic setting. These areas of strength are joined by select faculty and alumni holdings.
