Robin Bates received his B.A. from Carleton College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University. In recent years he has taught courses in American film, film genres, Jane Austen, madness and literature, and Restoration and 18th-century literature. He has twice visited Slovenia on visiting Fulbright professorships. In his scholarship, he studies why audiences respond to film and literature as they do and what those responses mean. He has supervised student senior projects on Jane Austen, Margaret Atwood, Tom Robbins, 1950s science fiction films and the cold war, the early gothic novel, the impact of film on audiences, biracial identity and the reading experience, and South African theater.
