Expenses and Financial Aid for Study Abroad

St. Mary's is committed to making opportunities for study abroad accessible to all students. In fact, St. Mary's Signature Semesters Abroad programs are designed to cost the same as if you were staying on campus.

Here you can learn about:

Financial aid
Scholarships
Payments and Services

Financial Aid

St. Mary's and federal financial aid (scholarships, grants, and loans) may be applied to any St. Mary's Semester Abroad program.
Eligible St. Mary's Semesters Abroad are:

  1. Akita International University (Akita, Japan)
  2. James Cook University (Queenland, Australia)
  3. Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) (Oxford, England)
  4. Fudan University (Shanghai, China)
  5. Heidelberg University (Heidelberg, Germany)
  6. Institute for Central American Studies (San Jose, Costa Rica)
  7. Lingnan University (Hong Kong, China)
  8. National Student Exchange (U.S., Canada)
  9. Payap University (Chiang Mai, Thailand)
  10. Sciences Po (Paris, France)
  11. Semester in India (Pondicherry, India)
  12. St. Mary's Semester in Argentina (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
  13. Signature Semester in Italy (Alba, Italy)
  14. Signature Semester in The Gambia (Kanifing, The Gambia)
  15. Université Michel de Montaigne (Bordeaux III) (Bordeaux, France)

Students who would like to apply financial aid to a study-abroad program must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form by February 15 of each calendar year. Please contact the St. Mary's Office of Financial Aid (240 895-3000) for more information about this application.

Students who choose to study abroad with a non-St. Mary's program may apply some aid - for example, federal financial aid - toward their participation in a non-SMCM program. These participants will not be able to apply St. Mary's scholarships or grants toward the fees of a non-St. Mary's program. Students are strongly advised to make an appointment with a representative from Financial Aid (240 895-3000) to review individual financial aid packages and to discuss financing options for their study-abroad programs.

Students who choose an academic course abroad - a study tour - may be eligible to apply financial aid toward this program, but they will need to discuss their options with a representative from Financial Aid. Students are strongly advised to make an appointment with a representative from Financial Aid (240 895-3000) to review individual financial aid packages and to discuss financing options for their study-abroad programs.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available for study abroad. The Office of International Education offers a web resource page for scholarships; don't limit your research to this resource. Any undergraduate scholarship may be applied toward credit-bearing study-abroad programs since participation in these programs earns credit towards degrees. SMCM Study Abroad Scholarship Awards range from approximately $250-$1000.

Payments and Services

Students who choose to study abroad with a St. Mary's Semester Abroad program will be billed by the Business Office as part of the normal billing cycle. Your bill is available through the Portal.  You will make payments for tuition and mandatory fee directly to St. Mary's College of Maryland in the same way that you would if you were staying on campus.  Program-specific fees and payments vary across program offerings; you need to consult the program-specific payment and service information for these payment details.

Program-specific payment and fee information for the following programs is available under "Expenses and Financial Aid" on each program's web page:

  1. Akita International University (Akita, Japan)
  2. James Cook University (Queenland, Australia)
  3. Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) (Oxford, England)
  4. Fudan University (Shanghai, China)
  5. Heidelberg University (Heidelberg, Germany)
  6. Institute for Central American Studies (San Jose, Costa Rica)
  7. Lingnan University (Hong Kong, China)
  8. National Student Exchange (U.S., Canada)
  9. Payap University (Chiang Mai, Thailand)
  10. Sciences Po (Paris, France)
  11. Semester in India (Pondicherry, India)
  12. St. Mary's Semester in Argentina (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
  13. Signature Semester in Italy (Alba, Italy)
  14. Signature Semester in The Gambia (Kanifing, The Gambia)
  15. Université Michel de Montaigne (Bordeaux III) (Bordeaux, France)

Students applying to a non-SMCM program will need to consult the program directly to find out about payments and services. Program-specific fees are paid directly to the program provider.

SMCM recommends that students participating in non-SMCM programs remain full-time, degree-seeking students at St. Mary's while studying abroad. Full-time, study-abroad students participating in non-SMCM programs are charged a fee of $250 per semester to retain the benefits they receive as a full-time status student (for example, distribution of applicable financial aid, no interruption to verification of enrollment for medical insurance).
