Heath and Safety during Study Abroad
Health and safety are prime concerns of all: participants, their families, advisers, institutions that send students abroad, institutions that host them, and the staff of all organizations that operate programs. There are unique risks to overseas travel, and when incidents occur, the impact on participants and their families is often more profound because of the unfamiliarity of the context and the distance that separates participants from their primary sources of consolation and support.
Sharing the resources and information provided here with parents, guardians, or significant others in your life can help you to assess the level of risk associated with your chosen study-abroad program and planned travel.

The U.S. State Department issues a variety of publications for travel and advisories for every country. These publications provide American travelers with current assessments from the State Department regarding safety and security, entrance requirements, access to medical care, and much more. Their recommendations for each country are easily accessible on the DOS Web site at http://travel.state.gov.
Before traveling to any country, you are advised to review the State Department's Country Specific Information Sheet for each country you plan to visit, as well as any Travel Alert or Travel Warnings also issued for each country.
The Office of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management (ACS)
