Welcome Back!
We look forward to seeing you and hearing about your adventures through National Student Exchange (NSE)!
To support you, we offer information about:
- Returning to St. Mary's;
- An Invitation for You;
- Sharing Your Story; and
- SMCM's NSE Ambassador Program
Returning to St. Mary's
For a smooth transition back to St. Mary's, follow this checklist.
You're Invited to our IE Welcome, Welcome Back Reception
Our Welcome, Welcome Back reception at the beginning of each semester is one of our favorite times throughout the year. It's our opportunity to welcome the students who've been to another state through NSE or abroad back to campus and to hear about their successes and challenges around the globe. It's also an opportunity to welcome our visiting exchange students and scholars to campus. Our students who've just been at an NSE partner school or abroad know exactly what the visiting exchange students and scholars who are new to campus are experiencing, and we hope these introductions are just the first step in forging new friendships...
Sharing Your Story
Future outbound NSE students want to hear from you! Think back to all the questions you had before going to the partner school. Didn't it seem like the more you learned, the more questions you started to think of? That's how students preparing to go to another school are feeling now.
We hope to share your story with your St. Mary's peers through:
- Student-to-Student discussions and Q&A forums
- Publishing your photos on St. Mary's web and in SMCM publications such as The Mulberry Tree, River Gazette, and IE brochures (sign into Bb for login info to upload to our IE Flickr account)
- Your responses to these questions (send to ie@smcm.edu):
- Why your destination? was it your major, a language preference, a place you'd always wanted to visit......any reason is a good reason!
- What did you experience there that you might not experience elsewhere? what was different about their campus culture...what was different about their approach to your major....what's unforgettable about your experience?
- Why should other students go on exchange through National Student Exchange?
- Why should other students choose your NSE school and study in your destination?
NSE Ambassador Program
What is an NSE Ambassador?An NSE Ambassador is an experienced St. Mary's College student who assists inbound NSE exchange students new to Maryland and new to St. Mary's College in getting to know life here at the College.
They also act as peer mentors to SMCM students seeking information about studying at an NSE partner school. They might participate in a general information session or a Student-to-Student: Ask Your Peers session.
Why Become an NSE Ambassador?
- Because new students need a trusting, friendly face on campus to help them in their first weeks and especially during the first semester.
- Because experienced students have a wealth of information to share.
- Because it is always better to give than to receive. [Remember the Grinch's heart grew ten times its size.]
- Because you will learn about yourself, and perhaps about another area of the U.S.
- Because one can never have too many friends.
- And finally, because it is the St. Mary's Way.
