Sociology Major
The sociology major combines theoretical insights with methodological training. Students explore social theory, research methods (qualitative and quantitative), race and ethnicity, gender studies, globalization and social justice. The capstone research project allows for in-depth independent or faculty-mentored research—culminating in public presentation and potential publication.
Sociology Minor
The Sociology minor provides essential analytical tools for students in other fields—such as education, public policy, health sciences and environmental studies. Minors take foundational courses in social research and theory, and choose electives in community development, criminology, or cultural sociology.

Honors College Promise
Sociology majors connect classroom learning with real-world experience—through partnerships with regional nonprofits, state agencies and research centers. Supported by faculty and Honors College funding, students engage in data collection, program evaluation and policy analysis. Many also present their work at academic conferences or publish findings through their St. Mary’s Project (SMP)—a year-long, faculty-mentored research project completed during senior year or through a capstone experience.
