Empowering Students Through Inclusive Education and Community Engagement
The St. Mary’s College of Maryland faculty foster intellectual, social, and ethical development within a close-knit community that leverages the strengths of diverse viewpoints and methods. We provide students with meaningful and accessible opportunities to grow as scholars and citizens; encouraging them to engage with and serve local, national, and global communities. Through research, collaboration, and service, we empower students to become agents of positive social change and responsible global leaders.

Teaching Excellence
When someone joins the St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) community, we make a meaningful and lasting commitment to support their growth, development, and success. This promise extends to every individual—students, faculty, staff, and administrators alike—and is rooted in our belief in the potential of each person. We do not define members of our community by their background, appearance, or past experiences. Instead, we focus on who they choose to become and what they strive to achieve during their time here.
This same commitment to growth and excellence guides our approach to assessment. The 2023–2024 academic year marked the beginning of “Cycle 3,” a four-year assessment period at SMCM. In this report, we share an overview of assessment activities and results from the past year, highlighting both Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) and Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs). While all programs follow a shared three-year cycle, the timing of PLO assessments varies—some programs review all outcomes annually, while others distribute assessments across one to three years. Through these efforts, we ensure that every member of our community has the opportunities, resources, and encouragement needed to thrive and make a lasting impact.

Research Excellence
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), on behalf of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Dean of the Faculty, is dedicated to providing comprehensive support and professional services that encourage and advance research, scholarly activity, and creative work. ORSP serves faculty, staff, and students by helping them pursue new ideas, secure external funding, and successfully carry out projects that contribute to the academic and intellectual life of the college
Faculty Resources
SMCM offers a wide range of resources to support faculty in their work. From teaching tools and technology help to professional development and personal support, these services are here to make your experience better.

Faculty Senate
The Faculty Senate shall serve as the executive committee of the faculty, and the Faculty Senate President and Vice President shall represent the faculty in deliberations with 368 officers of the College and the Board of Trustees. The Faculty Senate provides for the participation of the faculty in committee assignments and other appointments. It shall have the authority to establish ad hoc committees for particular purposes, but all such committees shall be of limited duration. The Faculty Senate receives reports from all committees of the faculty, from such ad hoc committees as it may establish, and from College officers responsible for the administration of academic support programs. In consequence of these reports, the Faculty Senate will determine the appropriate course of action.
