Dr. Leonard Brown Jr. is currently the Vice-President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Brown earned a B.A. from Dickinson College majoring in psychology. He received a M.S. in higher education administration from Western Illinois University and a M.A in theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and University Ecumenical Institute of Theology. He holds a Doctor of Management Degree from the University of Maryland University College.
Dr. Brown has worked for more than 25 years on College and University campuses to develop strong mentoring relationships with a variety of students including 1st generation students, under-represented students, athletes, and student leaders. His supervision portfolio has comprised of the essential components of student affairs including student conduct, residential life, crisis response, student activities, orientation, health services, counseling services, diversity affairs, student support services and violence prevention.
Dr. Brown particularly enjoys cross institutional partnerships that produce robust campus wide systems supporting student development. These include strategic planning and institutional visioning, data-driven approaches for retention and student success, refining risk management protocols and procedures, and developing and implementing new residential living models.
Diversity and Inclusion work has been a hallmark of his career as he has designed learning communities connected to academic courses, designed and presented numerous trainings to student leaders and student groups including athletic teams, developed retreat programs for cross-cultural discussions, and has been invited to provide diversity and inclusion training for local high school students. At both Loyola University Maryland and Dickinson College, Leonard worked with colleagues to create highly successful leadership development initiatives for men of color.
Dr. Brown lives in California, MD and has three wonderful daughters.
