St. Mary’s College of Maryland encourages all students to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to life experiences through involvement in experiential learning activities. Here at the Career Development Center we can help you to plan for internship and other meaningful employment opportunities for the Fall and Spring semesters, and Summer break.
SMCM students can participate in credit or non-credit internships, part-time or full-time, far from campus or locally, and even right on campus in such places as the library and Boyden Gallery. Many internships are competitive, however, and the application and approval process for many positions can take weeks to months. Because of this, it is essential that you PLAN AHEAD and initiate the process as early as possible in the semester preceding the intended internship: Early October for Spring internships, Early February for Summer and Fall internships (sooner for some internships).
Please note that policy at SMCM states that students may receive only credit OR pay for internship experiences, not both. Though our involvement is more extensive in the case of internships for credit, we are happy to assist you in identifying and applying for non-credit (paid or volunteer) internships as well. These internships are not actively tracked by the CDC and we do not require the completion of specific paperwork or assignments, but we nevertheless encourage you to keep us apprised of your activities and achievements.
Credit internships require that you have a 2.5 cumulative GPA (when applying) and junior or senior standing (when interning). Whether you are hoping to participate in an established internship program (e.g., HSMC) or are working to establish yourself as the first intern at a given organization, you must complete an application and a number of related forms in order to have your internship considered for credit. As a credit intern you will have a faculty sponsor in addition to a site supervisor; with the guidance of this faculty sponsor you will develop explicit learning objectives and complete several structured reflection assignments as well as an academic project. Please see the Credit Internship Program page for all instructions, forms, and policies. If you have questions that are not answered on our Web site, please give us a call (x4203), send us an email, stop by, or schedule an appointment online.
It is your responsibility to identify, contact, and secure your own potential internship site. You can begin your search for credit, paid, and volunteer internship opportunities by following the link below. We also have several additional print resources on internships in our office, and we recommend that you tap into your own professional network as well; communicate your professional goals to your professors, relatives, and friends and ask them about opportunities in their field that may be open to you.
