Foundational Study requirements make sure students are prepared for any next step they want to take. The Language Study requirement asks students to learn about culture by learning a language other than English. This experience prepares students to communicate well with others in diverse environments, to adapt to unfamiliar contexts, and to negotiate cultural differences with insight, respect, and creativity.
Together with the requirement in Cultural Literacy, the Language Study requirement helps each student take the first step toward the Honors College Promise, particularly studying abroad or embarking on a study tour. Whether by beginning study in a new language or honing the skills you already have, studying language at St. Mary’s doesn’t just help you understand other languages — it allows you to join the global conversation.
Language Study Requirement
Students must complete one language course at 102 or 110 level or higher. AP scores of 4 or 5 on a foreign language exam also fulfill this requirement.
