CSIS Forum

The Center for the Study of Democracy and The Patuxent Partnership hosted experts from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) for an international policy forum titled "U.S. Foreign Policy in the Indo-Pacific." The forum featured CSIS experts Erin Murphy, senior fellow in the Asia Program; William Alan Reinsch, senior adviser and Scholl Chair in International Business; Gregory Poling '07, senior fellow and director of the Southeast Program and Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative and Richard Rossow, senior adviser and chair in U.S.-India Policy Studies.

Aaron Yates

The Africa Series presented: To Give Your Life for Black Freedom: W. E. B. Du Bois and the Global Struggle for Freedom, Equality, and Independence. Aaron Yates discussed major developments in Black intellectual approaches to emancipation. He examined the life of W.E.B. Du Bois and the contextual evolution of his perspectives on knowledge and social action. In a career spanning more than seventy years, the work of W. E. B. Du Bois demonstrates a profound lifelong commitment to the promotion of justice and racial equality.

Pier-Philippe Chevigny

As part of the Amɘrica Dialogue Series, Pier-Philippe Chevigny's film Richelieu (2023) was screened, followed by a discussion with the director. This is about the brutal treatment of temporary foreign workers at a food processing plant in Richelieu, Quebec, and powerfully explores a pressing social issue. The fictional plot was inspired by the real stories of numerous Guatemalan farm workers who participated in Canada’s Temporary Worker Visa program.

Federico and George

As part of the America Dialogue Series, this panel delved into diverse narratives of migration, examining how Haitian and Indigenous diasporic communities navigate their experiences of displacement through creativity and solidarity. Federico Cuatlacualtl, professor of studio art at the University of Virginia, and George MacLeod, associate professor of French and Francophone Studies at SMCM, conducted the panel.
