Think Critically. Experiment Boldly.
At St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the Biochemistry program helps students learn how living things work at a molecular and cellular scale. It combines biology and chemistry, and students get to do fun, hands-on experiments. They learn how to think carefully, solve problems, and study things like how enzymes work and how genes turn on and off. This helps them get ready for jobs in science, medicine, or research.
The program is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, ensuring it meets high national standards. Students use modern labs, work closely with their professors and explore how biochemistry connects to other subjects. They learn to ask big questions—and how to find the answers.

Biochemistry Major
Biochemistry majors bring the sciences of biology and chemistry together.
As a student, you will:
- Learn about and take on the skills and techniques of modern experimental scientists
- Evaluate the impact of technology in relation to ethics
- Be aware of current events and current biological and chemical discoveries
- Develop the ability to take all you have learned, complete your own research, and successfully communicate the results
This degree program follows guidelines suggested by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for an undergraduate degree in biochemistry.
Your studies here will prepare you for careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, for graduate studies in either field, and for entry into medical, veterinary, dental, or pharmacy schools.

Honors College Promise
Like all degrees from Maryland’s Public Honors College, a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from St. Mary’s College can lead to many exciting and meaningful careers. Many students go on to become doctors, dentists, pharmacists or veterinarians using the strong lab and problem-solving skills they learned in the program. Others choose to keep studying in graduate school, focusing on subjects like biochemistry, molecular biology or medical research.
At SMCM, biochemistry students do hands-on research and often work closely with professors on special projects called the St. Mary’s Project. This two-semester project lets students show what they’ve learned and explore their own ideas. Students also get real-world experience through internships in labs, hospitals and biotech companies. Some even study abroad to learn how science and health connect around the world.
Whether you want to work in research, healthcare, public health or science communication a Biochemistry degree from SMCM gives you the skills, knowledge, and perspective to make a difference.
"One of my biochemistry faculty allowed me to participate in a year-long laboratory project with her and eventually publish an abstract with her and other students about breast cancer."

After you Graduate
Like other liberal arts degrees from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a Biochemistry major can lead to many different paths after graduation. There isn’t just one right direction—students leave with a strong background in science and the thinking skills to follow their own interests. Many graduates go on to study more in areas like medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or medical research. Others start working right away in jobs related to biotechnology, medicine, public health or environmental science.
Some use what they’ve learned about biology and chemistry to work in labs, forensics or research centers. Others use their wide range of skills to teach science, help shape health rules and policies or explain science to the public. Because St. Mary’s College focuses on ethics, communication and hands-on learning, biochemistry graduates are ready to solve tough problems, ask big questions, and become leaders in science and healthcare.
