Chemistry Major
At St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the Chemistry major gives students a deep and exciting look at how matter works—how it’s built, how it changes and what it can do. The program is based on the values of a strong liberal arts and honors college education. Students learn to think carefully, solve tough problems and explain their ideas clearly.
The classes cover all the main areas of chemistry like general, organic, physical, inorganic and analytical chemistry. Students also do hands-on lab work to build strong science skills. With small class sizes and helpful professors, students get to learn together and explore their own interests as they grow as scientists.
Chemistry students use modern lab equipment to do original research and complete a two-semester project called the St. Mary’s Project, where they design and carry out their own experiments. There are also chances to do internships or work across different subjects. Graduates are ready for careers in science, healthcare, the environment, teaching or more school in graduate or professional programs. At St. Mary’s College chemistry isn’t just something to study—it’s a way to explore, invent and make a difference.

Honors College Promise
Like all degrees from Maryland’s Public Honors College, a Chemistry major from St. Mary’s College helps students turn their interest in science into real careers. Many graduates go on to study more in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science or medicine. They are well prepared because of the challenging classes, research with professors, their own capstone project called the St. Mary’s Project. Other students go straight into jobs in areas like medicine, forensics, materials testing or science teaching.
During college, students also get real-world experience through internships at research labs, government offices or science companies. They use what they’ve learned to help solve problems in health, the environment and new technology. With strong lab skills, sharp thinking and a focus on doing what’s right, SMCM Chemistry graduates are ready to do more than just work in science—they’re ready to lead, ask questions and come up with new ideas.

"One of my biochemistry faculty allowed me to participate in a year-long laboratory project with her and eventually publish an abstract with her and other students about breast cancer."

After you Graduate
A Chemistry major can lead to many different paths after graduation. Some students go on to earn advanced degrees in chemistry, environmental science, materials science or engineering. Others go to medical, dental, pharmacy or veterinary school. The challenging classes and research at St. Mary’s help them get ready for these next steps.
Many graduates also begin careers in areas like medicine, environmental testing, forensic science, teaching or working in labs that check the quality of products. Because SMCM focuses on good communication, clear thinking and hands-on research, students leave with more than just science knowledge—they become flexible, thoughtful problem-solvers.
Whether they’re testing pollution levels, making new materials or helping improve healthcare, SMCM chemistry graduates use curiosity, clear thinking and honesty in everything they do.
