Spanish Major
The Spanish major at St. Mary’s College of Maryland immerses students in the rich linguistic, literary, and cultural traditions of Spain, Latin America, and the U.S. Hispanic experience. Courses explore topics such as language and literature, cultural and Indigenous studies, new media, translation, and community-based learning. Students can also incorporate coursework from Latino/a, Hispanic, and Latin American Studies. With opportunities to study abroad in Spanish-speaking countries, students deepen their language proficiency while gaining a broader understanding of diverse Spanish-speaking societies.
Spanish Minor
The Spanish concentration within the International Languages & Cultures minor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland develops oral proficiency, reading comprehension, and cultural understanding. Students complete a minor in international languages and cultures with a concentration in Spanish by completing a minimum of 18 credits of coursework in the target language, with a minimum of 12 credits of upper-level coursework

Spanish students can take full advantage of the Honors College Promise at SMCM by engaging in language immersion experiences and mentored projects. Through study abroad in countries like Costa Rica and Spain, internships in bilingual settings, or translation work with community organizations, students deepen both their language fluency and cultural insight.
