The Office of Public Safety is proud to announce that Captain Christopher Coons has officially become a Certified Clery Compliance Officer through the National Association of Clery Compliance Officers and Professionals (NACCOP).
This prestigious certification is the result of a rigorous, year-long program focused on ensuring compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act. Captain Coons successfully completed the training and passed the final assessment, demonstrating both his deep commitment to federal compliance and his continued leadership in campus safety.
We are incredibly proud of Captain Coons for this accomplishment. His dedication to professional development and mastery of Clery-related responsibilities exemplify how our department strives for excellence every day.

On Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Captain Coons, Officer Turner, and Rachael Louden from the Wellness Center provided CPR, AED, and First Aid training for 10 college staff. Funding for this training was provided by the SMCM Staff Senate.

On Friday May 2, 2025 the Office of Public Safety hosted the Barber Shop Talk Event. This event provided the opportunity for members of the campus community to receive a free hair cut and also engage in meaningful conversations with Public Safety Staff.

During April 2025, Captain Chris Coons, Officer Dave Turner from Public Safety, and Rachel Louden from the Wellness Center provided CPR/AED/First Aid training to students. Each student completed a blended learning course that consisted of an online module and an in-person skill session. Funding for this training was provided by the SMCM Student Government Association which allowed total of 42 students to receive a 2 year certification from the American Red Cross at no cost. Look for more opportunities to become certified during the fall semester.

On Monday, April 21st, Public Safety partnered with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee to host a basketball game with Students and Officers. During the first 3 quarters, Students were split into 2 teams with Officers on both teams. Then for the 4th quarter, the Officers formed one team and played against the students. While the Students came out on top (this time) a great time was had by all. Thank you again to the SAAC for hosting and we look forward to more of these events.

On March 18th the Office of Public Safety and the Public Safety Advisory Board host "A different kind of Ticket" event
Advisory Board member and Public Safety Officers were at Brew'd Awakening.
The event was open to everyone, and everyone who interacted with a member of the advisory board or a Public Safety Officer received a "Ticket" to receive a free cup of coffee!

On Saturday March 1st, Public Safety Officers took part in the 2025 Relay For Life event. Officers “arrested” attendees, who then had to raise bail money to get released. All money raised from bail was donated to Relay For Life for cancer research.
