Hands-on, realistic work experience for those exploring careers in museums, archaeology, history, administration, marketing, and many other fields.George Washington Semester in Washington (GW-SIW)
Students take two GW courses in applied politics and interning in the heart of DC and meeting with prominent national officials. Requires 3.0 GPA and junior standing. Return this special SMCM application usually by November 1 (spring), or March 8 (summer).The Washington Center (TWC)
This organization matches students to sites based on their interests and goals, and students register for internship credit at their SMCM. Please see our Step-by-Step Guide. Due dates vary; early application is encouraged.Institute for Central American Developments Studies (ICADS)

Students are placed with senior managers who introduce them to work with the DOT. Rising seniors of all majors (2.70 GPA). Includes $3500 stipend. Due date last year Friday, March 9, 2012.Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program
For students interested in nonprofit management. Students who have secured an unpaid internship at a nonprofit site can apply for a $3000 stipend through this program. Paid research assistantships in a Federal statistical agency in the DC area. Includes housing and weekly educational programming. Due date is January 7, 2012.REU: NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Summer research experiences in the sciences and social sciences. Search based on field and location and expect to apply separately to several programs. Typically includes stipend and housing. Students interested in REUs should also try this database and Google searching as well. Due dates vary, but are generally in February.SURF: NIST Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
For those interested in science/engineering careers. 11-week paid program based in Gaithersburg; housing is provided. Interested students must work with their department chair, the CDC, and Associate Provost Richard Platt on an institutional application. The student application form, along with supporting documents (resume, two recommendations, transcript, statement of research interests, and verification of citizenship) are due to Richard Platt by February 1 to allow timely submission of the institutional application to NIST by mid February. (There is a similar program in Boulder, Colorado.)Oak Ridge Associated Universities
ORAU administers a number of research programs for students and recent grads. Opportunities for nearly all majors, including several with the federal government.Critical Language Scholarships
Offers intensive summer language study overseas in eleven critical need foreign languages. Paid intensive language instruction at all levels as well as extensive cultural enrichment experiences. This 8-week paid summer internship program provides rising seniors with valuable experience at the UVA School of Education. Designed to encourage students from traditionally underrepresented groups to consider careers in education research or policy.
