Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule an appointment?

You have several options: you can stop by during our walk-in hours, and we'll do our best to assist you; you can use our online scheduler (your login, if you've never used it before, is your school email with your last name as your password); or you can give us a call at x4493.  Calling or stopping by is the best option if you can't make any of the posted hours.

Tutor Spotlight

Mary Clapp

Mary Clapp was a Writing Center Peer Tutor from Fall 2007 until she graduated in May 2009.

"My ideal place to talk about writing," Mary says, "would be on a rock face somewhere exotic, by a river, near an ecology lab, and would involve eating peanut butter. But the Writing Center is a pretty good venue, too."

Welcome to the Writing Center

"How do I know what I think until I see what I say?," novelist E.M. Forster once wrote. You might also ask, "How do I know what to write until I've talked though what I think?"

The Writing Center peer tutors are here both to help you talk out your ideas and to help you see what you've said. If you've got something to write and you haven't startedZach tutoring. yet, a Writing Center peer tutor can help you brainstorm, plan and start drafting. If you've already started, a tutor can read your draft and coach you through your revision.

But maybe you're thinking that Forster wasn't talking about the kind of writing you're doing in your biology lab paper, economics SMP or medical school personal statement. Maybe you're looking for help not in figuring out what you think, but in learning to write in an unfamiliar format, improve your grammar, use APA citation style or address a professional audience more effectively. We get that. Whatever your writing task, we're here to help.

The Writing Center tutors are students like you, from many majors and with many interests, and we've done the same kinds of writing you are asked to do. We've been trained to help with all kinds of writings at all stages of drafting and revision. So come in and talk.

This is a place where writers (and we're all writers) come together to talk about the craft of writing. You set the goals, and we help you meet them.

Your Friends,
The Peer Tutors
