Honors for All
We believe that the best learning springs from the rich human exchange between student and teacher. This exchange takes place in our small classes that are both challenging and engaging, in one-in-one interactions, and even on the walk paths that cross campus. This promotes learning on a deep and personalized level that is characteristic of St. Mary’s College.

Take the LEAD
LEAD stands for Learning Through Experiential and Applied Discovery. LEAD is our signature 21st century initiative that integrates credit bearing professional career development and the Honors College Promise with the innovative teaching and excellence of our academic programs.

What is an Honors College Education?
St. Mary’s College of Maryland was the first designated public honors college in the nation – and the model for those that have followed in other states. An honors education starts with the combination of a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum and an interactive learning environment defined by close mentoring relationships between students and the faculty. This is a natural complement to our liberal arts curriculum, through which students will learn how to approach a problem from a range of perspectives, disciplines, and methods.
We also offer the Honors College Promise – our guarantee that every student will have the opportunity to engage in a research, internship, or international experience. Learn more about these opportunities through the links below.

What's it like in a Classroom?
Our small, discussion-based classes sharpen your critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills. You’ll explore across disciplines; tackle real-world challenges; and apply your learning through research, internships, international education and a capstone experience that sets you apart.
"Our small classes allow me to really get to know my students. One of the great things about being at SMCM is that there's not a single week that I don't hear from former students. They'll tell me about their lives, their kids, and thank me when they're successful."

Graduate Studies
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
Our 10-month program will give students a strong knowledge base and understanding of child and adolescent development. If you want to succeed in schools, this is the place to start. The MAT program is a strong community of students, faculty, and staff that join together to ensure a brighter future for the children they teach.
Academic Excellence
The College has more than a dozen academic programs with chapters of national or international honor societies or other academic honors. Students earning these honors during their college career wear cords or medallions over their black gowns as a mark of this distinction.
