The Society for Applied Anthropology recently held the largest annual conference ever in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The theme for this year’s conference, “Intersections,” brought together current SMCM anthropology students and faculty, as well as alumni, who presented papers or posters on topics that ranged from East African pastoralists, to the department’s twenty year program in Gambia, to mid-Atlantic plantation sites’ interpretations of slavery.

Senior Katelyn Kean (’16) with SMCM Alumnus Gideon Singer (’12)

Bill Roberts, Professor and Chair of the Anthropology Department, stands by a poster that displays some of the PEACE program’s accomplishments over the twenty years the program linked SMCM with the people of The Gambia. On another day, anthropologist Bill Roberts and clinical psychologist Deborah O’Donnell gave a joint paper about their long-term project in Gambian senior secondary schools.

SMCM alumna Rebecca Quick (’13) presents her poster on the topic of Anthropology and Human Rights. Becca completes her Masters in Applied Anthropology from the University of Maryland this year.

Senior Anna Passaniti (’16) presenting her findings on efforts to combat trachoma eye infection in rural Turkana district, Kenya.
