Careers in Educational Studies

A minor in educational studies (EDST) or special education (EDSP) can open doors to a variety of careers outside of traditional classroom teaching. Graduates may find opportunities in a variety of fields. Some possibilities include:

• Educational program development for museums, zoos, or community centers, where they can create engaging and accessible learning experiences for diverse audiences.
• Nonprofit organizations look for program coordinators, outreach specialists, or family support advocates to work with children, families, and individuals with disabilities.
• Hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and social service agencies hire child life specialists, patient advocates, and case managers who can support individuals’ developmental and emotional needs.
• Publishing companies and ed-tech firms employ curriculum developers, accessibility specialists, or training designers who understand how to adapt content for different learners.
• Corporate training and human resources departments value candidates who can design inclusive onboarding programs and professional development sessions.

Outside of the classroom, St. Mary’s College of Maryland EDST/EDSP graduates have obtained employment as museum educators, outdoor educators, child life specialists, occupational and physical therapists, certified behavior analysts, guidance counselors, school and clinical psychologists, social workers, school administrators, higher education professionals, and with the Peace Corps.

With a strong foundation in understanding how people learn and how to make learning accessible, students with a minor in education or special education can pursue roles across health care, nonprofit, business, and community sectors.
