Meet Sandy Robbins, Office Associate for Kent Hall

December 31, 2012

How long have you been at SMCM?
I have been here in the same position since July 1995.

What path led you to St. Mary’s?
I had been commuting to DC and wanted to get closer to home. I
did home care for a year for an Alzheimer’s patient before being selected for the position here.

What do you do by day?
Provide administrative support for Kent Hall (the old History & Social Science Division) which includes receptionist duties, event planning, ensuring all components of the building and classroom media are operational, making travel arrangements, being part of Kent’s Emergency Response Team, and a variety of other tasks.

What do you do with your evenings/weekends?
Lots of playtime with my dog every day. Weekends – normal household chores and go out looking for photo subjects. Winter evenings – edit those photos if necessary, read, crochet, genealogy, admin on several Facebook pages and a Yahoo! Group, and attend the St. Mary’s Camera Club meetings every Wednesday (www.smccc.org). I have been the Membership Director/Treasurer for the last three years and was recently re-elected for 2013. Summer evenings I am chasing sunset shots and everything else that I do during the winter evenings.

What is your favorite off-campus lunch spot?
Courtney’s!

What would colleagues be surprised to find out about you?
My youngest grandchild just turned 18 on Thanksgiving Day and I am a great-grandmother of a one-year-old. Also… Early in June, the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomon’s Island, Maryland announced a call to artists for a juried exhibition celebrating National Lighthouse Day on August 5, 2012. My photograph of the Piney Point Lighthouse was accepted for the exhibition and displayed in the museum lobby gallery August 3, 2012 – September 4, 2012, along with about 40 other pieces of 2-D wall art depicting U.S. lighthouses. In August, I won first place in our camera club’s “themed” portion of the monthly competition with a shot of our very own Lady Seahawks and third place for a shot of a white heron. The theme for August was ‘motion’.

Meet Steve Hanlon, Area Coordinator for Late Night Programming

December 31, 2012

How long have you been at SMCM?
I started August 1, 2012 making it 4 months.

What path led you to St. Mary’s?
After I completed my graduate Assistantship at Arkansas Tech University, St. Mary’s filled a few different qualifications. I wanted a small school. In a small school, it is easier to get to know the staff, faculty, and most importantly the students. It also gave me the chance to supervise more than one residence hall. I am able to supervise three residence halls and hold a collateral position which gives me a chance to work on skills that are outside the realm of residence life. It also gives me a warmer climate than my native land of Michigan.

What do you do by day?
My daily position includes supervising the residence halls of Caroline, Prince George, and Queen Anne. I supervise the residence hall coordinators and indirectly supervise the resident assistants of those buildings. I manage the programming, daily operations, and serve as an on-call professional. I also work on putting together a late night programming platform that the students will be interested in. I also am in meetings and try to do various activities that will advance my development as a professional in the field.

What do you do with your evenings/weekends?
I am an avid sports fan. My favorite sports are football and baseball. I do enjoy video games as well which are usually related to sports. I do enjoy a few different TV series which involves the food network…now if I could only cook like them! When it is nice out, I will get out and enjoy the weather but that will be in a few months.

What is your favorite off-campus lunch spot?
I have not left campus for lunch yet, but am willing to try new things.

What would colleagues be surprised to find out about you?
I have a wide range of interests. I like to collect a wide range of items. I am a numismatic or collector of coins, particularity the quarters sets. I collect little plastic ducks, rocks and gems, and cards particularly in baseball. I enjoy country music with an emphasis in Taylor Swift music. One more shocking fact is that I have mentored a high school robotics team in some facet over the past four years.

Hats Off to Our Incredible Staff!

December 31, 2012

  • Joanne Goldwater, Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residence Life/Sign Language Instructor, is actively involved in two civic causes and her professional housing officers association. In Jan 2013, she will become the chair of the Research and Educational Foundation of the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I). She is also serving as the Secretary on the Board of Directors for the Arc of Southern Maryland (an organization that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities). However, what has touched her heart more than anything in the past two years is her volunteer work for the American Cancer Society (ACS). A 2 year (& counting!) breast cancer survivor with a strong desire to provide education and support to others, Joanne is involved with the College’s Relay for Life event (March 2- 3, 2013 in the MPOARC). She serves on the planning committee for the county-wide Relay for Life (June 8-9, 2013 at Leonardtown High School) and she served on the committee for St. Mary’s County Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) event on Oct 7. If you have any questions, worries, fears, concerns, or a desire to go for a cup of tea, please feel free to contact Joanne at x4207, GL 150, or jagoldwater@smcm.edu.
  • Mandy Reinig, Director of International Education, and Caitlin Ginter, Associate Director of IE, went to the NAFSA [Association of International Educators] Regional Conference which took place Nov. 15-17 in Alexandria, VA. Mandy presented “Pin It! Tweet It! Post It! Engaging Diverse Audiences” and “I Speak English, What Else is There to Know: Orientation for Study Abroad”. Caitlin presented “The NAFSA Academy Experience”.
