The Department of Biology is a close-knit community of faculty, staff, and students bound by a shared love for the living world.

The St. Mary’s Biology department’s curriculum is designed to introduce and reinforce concepts and skills through a well integrated set of four core courses and associated laboratories. Advanced courses, many including student-designed research projects, round out a biology student’s education and frequently lead to the St. Mary’s Project.

A liberal-arts education is excellent preparation for a career in the sciences. The liberal-arts education is broad and exposes students to connections among the many facets of life. We believe that the liberal-arts experience is more valuable and flexible than education focused on a specific career. Our aim is to prepare students for a successful future by building skills and perspectives that they carry for their lifetimes.
