MAY 4, 2022 UPDATE – NEW DEFINITIONS FROM MARYLAND DEPT. of HEALTH
For institutions of higher education, the Maryland Dept. of Health has defined a cohort as five or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases who are epidemiologically linked through a connection like a residence hall or a sports team, who have symptom onset dates within a 14-day period.
An outbreak is defined as happening when the campus community has five or more cohort outbreaks within 14 days; or 10% or more of all COVID-19 tests administered on campus in a 14-day period are positive AND the positivity rate is higher than that of the surrounding community. In the case of an outbreak, campus-wide mitigation would be put in place.
March 1, 2022 Update – Some Indoor Masking Relaxed
Message from President Jordan:
After consulting with the St. Mary’s County Health Department, the College is relaxing its mask requirement. Starting today (March 1), the wearing of masks is optional in indoor spaces. However, the College will continue to require masks in all classrooms, laboratories and studio spaces regardless of vaccination status. The continued wearing of masks in small, congested spaces is strongly suggested.
Within the classrooms, laboratories and studio spaces all must wear a tight-fitting mask, KN95 or N95 mask only. These types are the most effective masks recommended by the St. Mary’s County Health Department. The College can provide you with two KN95 masks, if needed. Resident students should ask your resident assistants or staff in the hall; commuter students should visit the Student Life Office; faculty and staff can pick them up from their building facility coordinators.
St. Mary’s College will continue to monitor and assess COVID-19 data through the week after Spring Break. I will issue another message by March 28 regarding any further lifting of any requirements. Of course, if conditions warrant, the mask mandate may be reinstated.
For now, all must continue to be up to date on vaccinations; once per week testing for those not up to date with vaccinations will continue. Students, starting today, if you believe you have COVID-19 symptoms and are seeking a PCR test at the Wellness Center, you must first schedule an appointment for an assessment with the nurse practitioner by calling 240-895-4289. Faculty and staff should use off-campus testing options, including free COVID-19 tests through the federal government.
Thank you for doing your part in helping to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on campus. Take care of yourself and the people around you by continuing to follow the College’s health and safety guidelines as they evolve. Stay informed by checking this page regularly and our daily dashboard.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our students, faculty and staff have demonstrated flexibility, creativity, dedication and resiliency. We welcomed all members of our community back safely to campus for the fall 2021 semester, and will continue in-person living and learning for the spring 2022 semester.
St. Mary’s College is a student-centered instructional and residential institution where students, faculty and staff thrive through personal interactions and direct relationships as members of our campus community. By offering an in-person living and learning community, our students fully benefit from the residential education experience and all that our campus has to offer.
Together, our vibrant community will do what we’ve always done: embody, embrace and commit to living the St. Mary’s Way with respect for self, respect for others and respect for the environment in which we each live.
Remember!

We are now more than a year into the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, our faculty, staff, and students have demonstrated flexibility, creativity, dedication, and resiliency. Though much of our learning and engagement have occurred remotely, we look forward to welcoming all members of our community back safely to campus in the fall. For those individuals who have been working on campus, your physical presence has made an important difference in the continued and successful operation of the College. Our plan is to resume our operations at full capacity in the fall 2021 semester. This document articulates a plan for expanding in-person activities on campus to achieve our aim.
St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the National Public Honors College, is a student-centered, high-touch, instructional and residential institution where students, staff, and faculty thrive through personal interactions and direct relationships as members of our campus community. It is the presence of faculty, staff, and students – and their interactions – on campus — that makes the College a successful, dynamic organization with a vibrant learning community. Being together allows faculty, staff, and students to get to know and informally interact with one another; it stimulates creativity through the cross-fertilization of ideas; and, as a student-centered organization, it allows students to fully benefit from the residential education experience and all that our campus has to offer.
As we look ahead to our shared presence on campus in the fall, we especially look forward to joining together in classroom-based and co-curricular learning. The creative efforts of our faculty and staff this past year have been both unprecedented and impressive. Faculty are encouraged to continue reimagining their courses in ways that reshape the future of teaching and learning at the College. Educational technologies that enrich learning will continue to augment our teaching and ensure that our students have access to engaging experiences. We encourage the integration of new teaching tools and new teaching practices to support plans for in-person instruction this fall. We welcome greater social interactions for our students outside the classroom.
The College has developed a set of assumptions and guidelines that will provide the basis for the development of plans which support the fall 2021 opening of the College. The assumptions that provided the foundation for the guidelines are as of May 12, 2021. With evolving public health and other guidance, as plans are developed it is likely that certain assumptions will have already been met and that others may still be ahead. The guidelines that follow the assumptions fall into two categories, instruction and people and operations. These guidelines will provide the framework for all fall 2021 opening planning.
Three committees have been convened and charged with developing plans for a smooth reopening that supports and celebrates our return to campus. The committees will address Public Health and Vaccine, Opening Logistics, and Student Life. In addition, the Provost has charged a faculty task force with instructional planning for the fall semester.
It is likely that you will have questions about the College’s fall 2021 opening plans. On the fall 2021 Opening website there will be a section dedicated to responding to your questions.
