St. Mary’s City is recognized as the birthplace of the idea of religious freedom and tolerance in America. Though that experiment in tolerance failed, our commitment to the ideals it represented must never fail. St. Mary’s College was founded to serve as a living legacy to the cause of freedom and inclusiveness. We, the members of the St. Mary’s College Political Science Department, are proud to be a part of this institution and the legacy it represents.
We recognize that national security is a necessary component of any nation’s immigration policy, but as Political Scientists we understand the importance of making decisions based on empirical and objective analysis.
The free flow of students and scholars, of ideas, across borders, and the existence of environments in which ideas can be freely discussed, are essential to the mission and vitality of our College, our state, and our country.
Actions that would stereotype or discriminate on the basis of religion, nationality, race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, or any other personal characteristic or identity, or that would impede free and open discussion, are an affront not only to the values the College was established to honor, but to the fundamental values of our nation. We stand in support of those values.
