ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland varsity coed sailing team is currently looking for enthusiastic athletes to join; no sailing experience necessary! However, a positive attitude, readiness to learn, competitive spirit, and athletic nature are desired. The Seahawks compete in both the fall and spring seasons. An interest meeting will be held on Sunday, September 1 at noon at the waterfront.
The SMCM varsity sailing team is no stranger to high stakes competition, having won over 15 national championships and produced over 150 All-American athletes. Notably the Seahawks have also earned an international reputation through post-collegiate sailing and coaching. Three Seahawk sailors and one coach have participated in the Olympic Games, with one of those sailors earning a silver medal. Additionally, two alumnae are Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year!
As mentioned above, no sailing experience is necessary. Sailing is a lifelong sport that can be picked up at any age. Many Seahawks have joined the sailing team with no prior experience, and have had tremendous success in college sailing and beyond. Including, three recent graduates, Rachel Ryan (’15), Hannah Chapman (’17), and Kaisey McCallion (’18), who first sailed at SMCM and still sail today. In college sailing, we sail small two-person dinghies so having good coordination and balance are the keys to being a successful crew.
If you are unable to attend the interest meeting on September 1 at noon, contact Coach Allison Shane at x3039 or at awshane@smcm.edu. Additional information can be found at www.smcm.edu/waterfront/sailing/.
