John Deamond uses photography and related methods to examine our interaction with the natural world. Embracing the open-source ethos of the Internet, John publishes his work under a Creative Commons copyright. He combines the results of his explorations into installations and books, believing these methods best reveal the progress and production of his work. Educated as a photographer, John is interested in exploring the edges of this medium, deconstructing it and analyzing its constituent parts (instantaneous capture, duplication, conversion of time, reproduction of the “real”) to build his own processes. His most recent project, A Field Guide to the Extinct and Extirpated Birds of North America, uses photography, digital capture from the internet, and shopping to explore the status of extinct North American Birds in contemporary culture. John compiled these investigations into a field guide, accompanied by an explorable research collection that supplements the book.

Educated at Parsons School of Design and St. Mary’s College of Maryland, John now works in an instructional support role at Montgomery College in Takoma Park, MD. In this role and his previous role as Coordinator of College Exhibitions at the Corcoran, he has led numerous workshops on exhibition preparation and installation, lighting, and photographic processes. John’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in New York, Philadelphia, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Las Vegas. His photography and artwork has been published in The NYPH Journal and the TPB News, and the Jamaica Observer has published his review of an exhibition at the Art Museum of the Americas. John is a winner of the New York Photo Awards for 2014.   www.jdeamond.com
